Junior Moomba - Australia and USA fight it out for gold

De Ja Vu! Back-to-back overall wins for Aussie Tim Bradstreet and American Lauren Morgan capped off a great two day competition at the 2010 Junior Moomba Masters.

Morgan just pipped Australia's Jacinta Carroll by 4 points out of a possible 3000 in a very close race in the girls overall. Carroll took home gold in girls jump, and first-timer Makayla Haw from the US won gold in the girls slalom event, defeating defending champion Gabrielle Viljoen from South Africa.

In the girls tricks, the fairy tale almost came true for 10-year-old starlet Anna Gay, who had to settle for silver behind Lauren Morgan after the judges reviewed video of her run and penalised one trick. It has been a great introduction to the Yarra River for Anna and many other young competitors from all over the world.

In the boys, Tim Bradstreet came very close to making a clean sweep of all three events, winning gold in tricks and easily in jump with a 54m leap. The slalom final threw up some brilliant performances, with Bradstreet's 2@11.25m on the final run of the day not enough to outdo a sensational 4@11.25m from the USA's Zane Nicholson, competing on the Yarra for the first time.

Junior Moomba finished with the close of the boys jump, but the winning didn't stop there with junior Australian Alex Pollock taking out the second heat of Night Jump last night with a 48.4m jump, much to the delight of the locals in the crowd.

The wakeboarding kicked off with a fantastic preview of the main competition on the weekend, with young male and female riders going massive on the river.

Pick up the Herald Sun today in Melbourne and check out the story and pic of Anna Gay on page 11, and another brief on the comp here.

All the day's results can be found here - head down to the Yarra today to see the senior Moomba Masters qualifying from 8am.
