No tournament in the world is more famous for distance jumping than the Moomba Masters. Every year hundreds of thousands of spectators flock to the banks of the Yarra River in Melbourne to see the world's finest launching into the air high above the city.
Distance jumpers are allowed three jumps per round, with the longest distance of the three counting as their score. The winner is the athlete who leaps the furthest distance and successfully rides away – jumps are not recorded if the skier drops the handle before the ramp or does not ski away.
Gaining distance is a combination of speed, timing and flawless ramp technique. At the Moomba Masters you'll see the top men and women in the world pushing the envelope on every jump, hitting the ramp at speeds of over 60mph and launching high above the crowd.
The tight confines of the Yarra River make the Moomba Masters a challenging jump course, but the buzz of the huge crowd pushes the skiers to extraordinary levels and many records have been broken at this world famous site.
Powered by the Ski Nautique 200, boat speeds are maintained with precision. Mens maximum speed is 35mph (57kmh) and Womens is 33mph (54kmh).
The current Mens World Record holder is Freddy Krueger at 74.2m (243 feet) and the current Womens World Record Holder is Elena Milakova at 56.6m (186 feet).
